A quick update before heading to work...

Looks like the new hive stayed in place for the night.  It is a very small and weak hive but we are glad to see them staying put for now.  I made up some sugar water to help them along.  One of the bars in the next town over saves us the big jars from pickles and maraschino cherries that works great for this.

Our honey is still dripping away in the jars.  Since it cools down at night we put them on the front porch to warm up a bit in the sun.

One of our hens laid a rubber egg.  We swapped out the calcium we had out for them and hopes this does the trick.  Having hens is new to me so I will have to investigate as to why this may have happened other than the calcium.  These are spoiled chickens. Besides their feed and hen scratch, they get spinach, salad scraps, fruit scraps and on cold days I make them oatmeal !

Dude began tilling.  Doesn't it look beautiful?  Next we are going to but the raised beds down.  He says after this we will just be adding to them each year with compost and soil.

Next we extend the chicken pen to make it larger.  Look at the girls watching all the action and wishing they were snatching up worms!
ps... did you see West Virginia Passed  Beekeeping Immunity law?  It helps their state insect is the bee .... grin.

March... supposedly our snowiest month in Colorado. It did snow today but the big fluffy flakes melted as they hit the ground. The day began warm enough , 49/50 * but by lunch it had begun to snow. Tomorrow it is suppose to be close to 60*, can you believe it? 60* That's Colorado for you.

St Patrick's day is usually the day for us to plant or get ready to plant our peas, spinach and lettuces. I am beginning to get excited about it . We will need to get the pen area of the hen house extended and round up the girls. I am not sure how they are going to like that. They are used to chasing each other and talking about the neighbors and school kids as they walk by. Hmm we will have to wait and see. I want to move the strawberries and need to start a new compost pile since the chicken demolished the old one. Here is a picture of the new chicks and their home, a converted rabbit hutch. They won't even begin to go outside until they are 5 months old and only for 1/2 day at that. P1010186.jpg picture by threadsisterI will have to watch this little chick. She seems to like to sleep with her head out of the bars. P1010184.jpg picture by threadsister
