1 1/2 cups Borax 1 1/2 cups soap flakes 1 bar castile soap Optional - few drops of essential oil. If you use a scented castile soap, it's unecessary.
Directions
Step 1:
Take a bar of castile soap, and run it through the food processor. I used the grater blade.
Step 2:
Change the blade to the regular chopping blade. Dump the grated soap back in the food processor.
Step 3:
Add 1 1/2 cups each borax and soap flakes to the soap.
Step 4:
Give it a whirl, until thoroughly mixed and the soap shreds have broken down. Store in the container of your choice.
Other Notes
Things you need to know:
Use 1 Tbsp for normal loads, 2 Tbsp for large or extra dirty loads.
You can use vinegar in the rise cycle - both to soften clothes and to remove any soap residue from your washer.
Not recommended if you use greywater to water your garden, as Borax and soap flakes both contain sodium, and are mildly toxic to plants and animals. Perhaps try soap nuts instead.
It's impossible to find soap flakes here in S. California. So I'm trying another recipe. 1 Bar of Castile soap (I'm using lavender), 1 cup of Borax, 1 cup of soda ash (in lieu of washing soda it's the same thing) I have a load in the wash right now, I used 1 tablespoon.
